- A term used to describe the separation of video signal components used in systems such as Hi-8* and S-VHS*. Generically called S-Video. YUV: A video system employing luminance* and two chroma components directly related to the red and blue components. Interface devices are used to link the various component systems, ie, RGB*, Y/C*, YUV and YIQ (a system similar to YUV).

- Luminance and Chrominance, ie, the 'brightness information' and 'colour information' parts of a composite video signal. The symbol Y was chosen long before the computer age, when TV and printing technologies were unrelated (the potential confusion being that Y also stands for yellow). YS: Yellow Submarine (we all live in one). Beatles inspired name for Sea & Sea's first ever product (a flash unit). Sea & Sea strobes are still called "YS", even though most of them aren't yellow any more.

- A video format found in Super-VHS video recorders. Luminance is marked with Y and is produced separate to the C, which stands for chrominance. Thus, an S-VHS output Y/C requires two coaxial cables for a perfect output.

- Abbreviation for luminance/ chrominance, aka S-video signal. Color and detail signals are kept separate, thus preventing composite video artifacts. Cable uses four-pin connector. Used with S-VHS VCRs, DVD players, Hi-8, and DBS receivers.

- A technology for transmitting video signals over a cable by dividing the video information into two separate signals: one for color (chrominance), and the other for brightness (luminance). When sent to a television, this produces sharper images than composite video, where the video information is transmitted as a single signal over one wire. This is because televisions are designed to display separate Luminance (Y) and Chrominance (C) signals. (The terms Y/C video and S-Video are the same.)

- S-Video, also known as Y/C and (incorrectly) SVHS, is an analog video signal. S-Video will appear better than composite video since the TV does not have to decode the brightness and color information that are found together on composite video.
