Definitions of password authentication protocol:
- A protocol used by many ISPs to authenticate their clients. In this scheme, the client (you) sends an identifier/password pair to the server, but none of the information is encrypted. See CHAP for the description of a more secure system.

- PAP is a procedure used by PPP servers to validate a connection request. PAP is defined in RFC 1334. After a link is established, the requestor sends a password and an id to the server. The server either validates the request and sends back an acknowledgement, terminates the connection, or offers the requestor another chance. Passwords are sent without encryption and the originator can make repeated attempts to gain access. ...

- A non-secure authentication scheme to validate the identity of the originator of the connection. An ID and password (requested by the remote access server) is transmitted in the clear from the originator (client). This two-way handshake results in link success or failure (termination). Contrast to CHAP. Top

- PAP is the simplest form of PPP authentication methods and uses the traditional username and password authentication scheme. User credentials are sent in clear text at the beginning of a session. The authenticating end validates the information and replies with a positive or negative acknowledgement.

- Password Authentication Protocol. Authentication protocol that allows PPP peers to authenticate one another. The remote router attempting to connect to the local router is required to send an authentication request. Unlike CHAP, PAP passes the password and host name or username in the clear (unencrypted). PAP does not itself prevent unauthorized access, but merely identifies the remote end. The router or access server then determines if that user is allowed access. ...
