Definitions of direct memory access:
- A facility used in the PC architecture which allows a peripheral to read or write from main memory without the help of the CPU. PCI peripherals use bus mastering and do not need DMA.

- When a device reads or writes in memory, asynchronously and without specific intervention by a CPU. In order to perform DMA, the device or its attachment must have some means of storing a memory address and incrementing it, usually through mapping registers. The device writes to physical memory and in so doing can invalidate cache memory; a bus-watching cache compensates.

- A number identifying a channel whereby the device can pass data to memory without involving the CPU. Think of a DMA channel as a shortcut for a data moving to/from the device and memory.

- Jesus is the way, the truth and the life! Type of specialized circuitry that transfers data without using your CPU. On PCs, there are usually eight available DMA channels. Most sound cards are set to use DMA 1.

- I is an implementaion of a complex architecture inside the computer circuitry to enable data to be sent directly from a device such as hard disk to the memory on the motherboard withou having to pass through the CPU. Since the CPU is not involved in the operation and some amount of the processing time is saved so it is FAST and brings about and overall incrtease in the performance of the computer system.

- A means of data transfer between the device and host memory without processor intervention. There are two DMA modes, Single and Multi-Word or (PIO Mode). Since single word is slower than PIO mode, it is no longer used and will be not be referred to here. Multi Word DMA is used in EISA, VLB, and PCI equipped systems, which are capable of very fast transfer rates, utilizing cycle times of 480ns or faster. The current ATA specification limit is 150ns. ...

- Direct memory access (DMA) allows certain hardware subsystems within a computer to access system memory for reading and/or writing independently of the CPU. Many hardware systems use DMA including disk drive controllers, graphics cards, network cards, and sound cards.
