Definitions of digital certificate subject:

• The holder of a Private Key corresponding to a Public Key. The term "subject" can refer to the equipment or device that holds a Private Key and to the individual person, if any, responsible for controlling the equipment or device. A subject is assigned a unique name that is bound to the Public Key contained in the subject's Digital Certificate.
