Definitions of colour bit depth:

• The number of bits used to represent each pixel in an image; the higher the bit depth the more colours appear in the image: 1-bit colour: black & white image with no greys or colours, 8-bit colour: 256 colours or greys, 24-bit colour: 16.7 million colours ('photorealistic' colour).
