Web hosting Glossary
Definitions of client/server architecture:
- A network architecture in which computers on a network act as a server managing files and network services OR as a client where users run applications and access servers. Clients rely on servers for resources like web pages, data, files, printing and OLAP. See the client/server FAQ at http://www.abs.net/~lloyd/csfaq.txt

- A networked environment where a smaller system such as a PC interacts with a larger, faster system. This allows the processing to be performed on the larger system which frees the user's PC. The larger system is able to connect and disconnect from the clients in order to more efficiently process the data.

- A network architecture in which processing is split between workstations (clients) and the server.

- A systems architecture that divides functions between two or more computers. The client is the information-requesting machine and the server is the information-supplying machine.

- A type of network environment in which the database, stored on a central server machine can be accessed from several client workstations. BusinessObjects is install on the client workstations.

- A catch where one program can initiate a session and another program can answer its requests. The origin of client/server designs is closely allied with the TCP/IP protocol suite.

- A network model that a computer or process server uses to provide services to the workstations (clients) connected to that computer (server). This architecture allows the client to share resources such as files, printers, and processing power with other clients.

- is a type of distributed architecture where end-user PC's (clients) request services or data from designated processors or peripherals (servers).
