The Data (or Delta) channel that carries administrative and signaling messages for the two B channels. The D channel for BRI has a transfer rate of 16 kbps (64 kbps for PRI). D channel signals describe the type of service requested for aB channel. The Caller ID system uses the D channel to transmit the calling party's telephone number so that it can be seen by the recipient before voice communication is established via aB channel. In ISDN, a channel for the transmission of service information. All the relevant signals for connection and disconnection of the link are carried in the D channel. 1TR6 and DSS1 are different and non-compatible D channel protocols.

An ISDN Data channel is a data connection between the telephone company’s switching equipment and their customer’s ISDN equipment. It carries telephone connection information - signals to tell your equipment that a call is coming in and carry dialing and call handling information to the phone company’s equipment - and can also be used to carry multiple low-speed data connections using the X.25 packet-switching protocol.
